OpenAI released GPT-5.5 Instant as the new default ChatGPT model, replacing GPT-5.3 Instant. The company says the model reduces hallucination in sensitive areas such as law, medicine, and finance, while maintaining the low latency of its predecessor.

For small business owners, the most important new feature is memory. GPT-5.5 Instant can use its search tool to refer back to past conversations, files, and Gmail to give you more personalized answers. This feature is available to Plus and Pro users on the web.

What this means practically: ChatGPT can now remember your business context across conversations. Google’s annual developer conference opens today, and the implications for small business owners are significant.

Google is expected to announce major Gemini upgrades, new agentic AI capabilities, and the debut of Android XR glasses at I/O 2026.

The company’s pre-event signals point to improvements in Gemini’s ability to complete multi-step tasks automatically across Google Workspace — Gmail, Drive, Calendar, Docs, and Sheets.

For small businesses already inside the Google ecosystem, the most impactful expected announcement is Gemini Spark — a new agentic capability that could automate tasks like decluttering inboxes by summarizing or archiving newsletters, preparing meeting briefs, and creating personalised news digests that track stories over time.

This one is longer-term but important for the global SMB community.

Anthropic announced a $200 million partnership with the Gates Foundation focused on expanding AI access to underserved business communities globally. The partnership will fund AI tools, training, and infrastructure for small businesses in emerging and developing markets — including Southeast Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, and Latin America.

For businesses in the US and EU, this signals something important: the largest philanthropic and technology organizations in the world now believe AI for small business is a mission-critical priority. The investment landscape, the tool development, and the training infrastructure being built will benefit SMB owners everywhere over the next three to five years.

Also Happening

Xero doubles down on AI. CEO Sukhinder Cassidy reports 2.6 million Xero customers used at least one AI feature in the past year, including 513,000 using generative AI features (up from 300,000 in February) .

Xero also launched XeroForce – a natural-language agent builder that lets businesses turn custom workflows into AI agents without coding. It’s in closed alpha, but worth watching if you’re a Xero shop .

And Xero + Claude are now live. You can query your Xero data directly inside Claude – cash position, overdue invoices, revenue trends – without exporting reports . Data is session-only and not used for training.

Worth knowing: Small businesses account for 44% of US GDP, but AI adoption has lagged enterprises. That gap is closing fast.
